How does it work?

Conventional wisdom holds that damp concrete floors with failed or no DPM installed, should either be dug out and new concrete poured over a polythene DPM, or that the existing floor be over-laid with a concrete screed that might be of considerable thickness.

The “dig out” approach is both environmentally and financially unsustainable. Concrete production is one of the most carbon intensive manufacturing processes and as a commodity its price has increased dramatically in recent times.  So “recycling” existing concrete has never made more sense.  The “over-lay” option is fraught with difficulties too, not least being that you raise the floor height which in turn reduces head room and often requires relocation of pipes, wiring and even staircases.

Our Damp Floor Epoxy Kit and its companion Clear Epoxy Primer essentially facilitate the re-use of an old concrete floor, without significantly altering the floor level, even if it is cracked, damp or otherwise imperfect.  This non-destructive approach has the added advantage of placing fewer stresses on the building structure, as there is no need for percussive demolition tools.

Our choice of epoxy resin in the formulation was derived from a need for mechanical strength, flexibility and water resilience.  Nothing else provides the same combination of adhesion, toughness, durability and waterproofing but in a “thin” screed.

The old concrete is first brush-primed with our Clear Epoxy Primer and then the “self-level epoxy resin” is mixed with our “self-level mortar” until a workable (with trowel) consistency is achieved.  The primer maximises the continuity of bond between the floor substrate and the resin mortar screed you trowel on top.

When evaluating against cheaper alternatives it is also important to understand that damp floors release corrosive (hygroscopic) salts which eventually undermine and de-laminate all damp proof paints or paintable membranes.   By contrast our epoxy system is resistant to chloride contamination and possesses both the intrinsic mechanical strength and adhesion properties required to bond, even to damp floors without delamination, permanently.

How much will I need?

It very much depends on the surface area and the condition of the concrete.  Coverage is 7.5 sq m per kit at 2mm thickness.  An average project is 25 to 30 sq m which typically requires 1 x 4Kg Clear Epoxy Primer *(sold separately) and 4 x Damp Floor Epoxy Kits.  This coverage will decrease if the floor level varies significantly and/or if there are cracks or indentations to fill in.

30kg Damp Floor Epoxy Kit comprises of:
•    1x 25kg bag of epoxy self-level mortar
•    1x 4kg epoxy resin pack
•    1x 1kg epoxy activator pack

4 kg Clear Epoxy Primer:
•    1x 3kg epoxy resin pack
•    1x 1kg epoxy activator pack

*IMPORTANT!

Clear Epoxy Primer is sold separately as you typically only need 1 x primer to 4 kits.  The Damp Floor Epoxy Kit must always be used in conjunction with the primer.
