“Mould Cure” is our HSE certified Mould and Mildew Remover, which when used in conjunction with our “Thermapaint Anti-Mould Paint” is a proven mould suppressant and re-decoration system, trusted by homeowners, social housing providers and landlords.
Recent cases highlighted in the media have brought into sharp focus, the real danger posed by uncontrolled mould infestations in poorly maintained and inadequately ventilated properties. Whilst fatalities linked to black mould and mildew are mercifully rare, there is an increasing body of anecdotal evidence to suggest that its presence, particularly in the rented sector, is negatively impacting on the quality of life of thousands of people, especially allergy and asthma sufferers.
Frustratingly, it really doesn’t need to be this way. Our experience as a manufacturer of damp proofing products, and by extension the feedback from our contractors, tells us that a vast majority of black mould infection cases (more than 9 out of 10) are not derived from expensive-to-fix structural issues, they are primarily caused by condensation. Removing black mould and controlling condensation are fractionally expensive, compared to structural repairs, so there is little financial impediment to solving most mould problems.
It is important to note that black mould can occur in any home, regardless as to how well maintained it might otherwise be. Mould does not discriminate!
As with infections in our bodies, the key to rapid recovery is early detection and early treatment. If black mould is taking hold in one corner of a room for example, don’t ignore it. The sooner the black mould is removed, the less likely it will be able to spread, especially if you identify the source of the problem.
Mould and mildew need two things to grow, a nutrient source and moisture. The nutrient might be plaster, wood, paint or even wallpaper, and the moisture comes from water vapour, which in turn derives from everyday activities including, showering, boiling a kettle, drying clothes and even breathing. Remove the moisture and you remove the problem.
Diagnosis is often easier than you might first think. If the mould is on your bathroom ceiling, it is likely that the extraction fan is either inadequate or needing cleaned. If it is behind a wardrobe or chest of drawers, move the furniture a few inches away from the wall to improve airflow behind it. If the mould is in your bedroom, often around the window reveal, make sure the trickle vents are open at the top of the window frame. In most cases, opening a window, even fractionally, will dramatically improve air quality. If you are not sure, phone one of our friendly advisers, to discuss your specific circumstances.
Having identified and dealt with the source of moisture, what do you do to remove the unsightly black mould staining left behind on your wall and ceiling?
Firstly, you clean and remove the active mould spores with our even-more-active “Mould Cure Bio-Wash” which will kill the infection and remove the mould & mildew fungi. This creates a neutral surface for the application of either our “Anti-Mould Paint” or our “Thermapaint Anti-Mould”.
Both our standard “Anti-Mould Emulsion Paint” and our “Mould Cure”, create an active-film fungicide on the surface, upon which mould simply cannot grow. The“Thermapaint Anti-Mould” has the additional inclusion of vacuum ceramic micro-beads, which raise the surface temperature of the wall slightly, discouraging the formation of condensation on the painted surface. In that sense it is dual action paint. It is available in 72 natural colours from our Lakes & Fells collection, developed in Cumbria.
If you need to blend a repair with an existing colour, our“Anti-mould paint additive” might be your perfect solution. Simply add to any emulsion paint in your preferred colour to create your own bespoke anti-mould paint.
Due to ADR regs on transport of flammables we can only send 25L drums of solvent product via premium rate special carrier, hence minimum FREE carriage order is 4 x 25L or ring for a quote. Alternatively, you can still collect single 25L drums at our Ulverston or Glasgow trade counters.
