Weatherflex Like a Pro – A Guide to Getting the Most from Exterior Masonry Coating

Protecting your home from the elements is what we’re all about here at Kingfisher. Our Weatherflex exterior masonry coating has now been safeguarding homes in the Lake District and beyond for over two decades. Here’s how you can care for your property like a pro with our top tips on getting the most from this exceptional (if we do say so ourselves!) product.

Understanding Weatherflex exterior masonry coating

Weatherflex is designed to provide superior protection as well as making your home look fantastic. Available in a stunning range of contemporary colours inspired by the lakes and fells we call home, our premium-grade, breathable coating is perfect for almost all types of masonry and mineral-based surfaces.

Key features of Weatherflex

Flexibility: We designed Weatherflex to be elastic and this is one of its standout features. This elasticity means it can bridge cracks and move with the substrate's expansion and contraction. This prevents any of that unsightly flaking or delamination that often happens with other brands.

Durability: Weatherflex offers exceptional waterproofing even in extreme conditions. That’s because we lovingly craft it from materials which have been specially selected for their long-term performance.

Breathability: Weatherflex has a microporous finish which makes it excellent at keeping water out while also allowing the substrate to breathe. This handy feature helps prevent moisture build-up and damage.

How to Apply Weatherflex Exterior Masonry Coating

Surface Preparation:

Cleaning: Start by washing away loose dirt with clean water and a scrubbing brush. Use mild detergent if you need it and afterwards allow the surface to dry completely.

Remove loose paint: Grab a paint stripper, grit blaster, or a wire brush and scraper to remove any loose paint that’s hanging around. You don’t need to remove all the existing paint, just the flaky bits.

Neutralise moss & mould: If you’ve got green mould, lichens, or moss on your walls, treat the affected areas with Kingfisher Bio Wash first

Repair damage: Check mortar joints or render for decay and repair any crumbly areas with Kingfisher Pointing Solution for enhanced waterproofing and flexibility.

Stabilising & priming: For any slightly friable or soft surfaces, you’ll need to prime with Weatherflex Stabilising Solution first. This will harden the surface and improve adhesion.

Application:

Stir thoroughly: Before you get stuck in there and start painting, stir the coating thoroughly to ensure an even consistency.

Coverage: Typical coverage is 8 to 10 square metres per litre. For textured or porous surfaces, coverage may be reduced to approximately 5 to 6 square metres per litre.

Apply coats: Use a brush, premium masonry roller, or high-pressure airless sprayer (smooth surfaces only) to apply the coating. For best results, apply at least two coats, allowing proper drying time between each.

Detailing: Use a two-inch premium brush to cut in around windows and doors for a pro finish. If you’re spraying, ensure to mask off windows and other areas to avoid overspray.

Important Tips for Using Weatherflex

Temperature: Do not apply in temperatures below 7°C or if the wall surface temperature exceeds 32°C.

Weather: Avoid application in wet conditions or if rain is expected within 24 hours of application.

Damp surfaces: Ensure surfaces are dry before application.

Salt contamination: If salt contamination is detected, pre-treat with Kingfisher Eco-Brick Cleaner.

By following these guidelines, you can make sure that you’re getting the very most out of your Weatherflex purchase – and getting the maximum protection and longevity for your home’s exterior. With its superior flexibility, durability, and breathability, Weatherflex is the ideal choice for keeping your home protected and looking great in all weather conditions.
