When correctly applied to a well-prepared surface, professional-grade block paving sealers like K-Seal typically protect for 3-4 years before a maintenance coat is required. This is significantly longer than water-based alternatives, which often need yearly reapplication. Factors affecting longevity include surface preparation, application technique, weather exposure, and traffic intensity. For driveways with heavy vehicle use, you may need to apply a maintenance coat to high-traffic areas more frequently.
Yes, one of the primary benefits of a quality block paving sealer is that it penetrates and solidifies the jointing sand between paving blocks, which helps prevent weed seeds from germinating and taking root. The sealer creates a barrier that makes it difficult for weeds to establish themselves in the joints. For maximum weed prevention, ensure that joints are adequately filled with kiln-dried sand before application and that the sealer thoroughly penetrates these joints during application.
The ideal conditions for applying block paving sealer are dry, mild days with temperatures between 10-25°C, with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours. Spring and early autumn are typically the best seasons in the UK, as summer can sometimes be too hot (causing the sealer to dry too quickly) and winter too cold or damp. Never apply sealer to damp surfaces or when dew, rain, or cold temperatures are expected, as this can affect adhesion and curing.
We recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks before sealing for new block paving to allow for initial settlement and for any efflorescence (white salt deposits) to appear and be treated. This waiting period stabilises the paving and allows any manufacturing salts to be naturally washed away. For new concrete paving, wait at least 30 days for the concrete to fully cure before applying sealer. Sealing too early can trap moisture and salts, leading to a cloudy appearance or poor adhesion.
Our solvent-based acrylic formula provides several advantages over water-based sealers: Superior penetration – penetrates deeper into porous surfaces for better protection Longer-lasting protection – typically lasts 3-4 years compared to 1-2 years for water-based sealers Better colour enhancement – provides richer colour enhancement, especially for dark materials like black limestone Excellent oil resistance – creates a barrier that resists vehicle oil spills and BBQ grease All-weather durability – withstands freeze-thaw cycles and UV exposure better than water-based options Water-based sealers are easier to apply and have lower odour, but simply don\'t offer the same level of protection or longevity.
Coverage rates depend on the porosity and type of surface being sealed. As a general guide: Block paving: 4-5 m² per litre per coat Natural stone: 3-4 m² per litre per coat Concrete: 5-6 m² per litre per coat We always recommend applying two coats for optimal protection, so calculate your total area, divide by the appropriate coverage rate, and multiply by two. For example, a 50m² block-paved driveway would require approximately 20-25 litres of sealer for two coats (50 ÷ 4.5 = 11.1 litres per coat × 2 coats = 22.2 litres). It\'s always wise to purchase slightly more than your calculation to ensure you don\'t run short during application.
If the existing sealer is still in reasonable condition with no peeling, flaking, or discolouration, you typically don\'t need to remove it before applying a maintenance coat of K-Seal. Clean the surface thoroughly and apply a fresh coat once dry. However, if the old sealer is failing, showing signs of delamination, or is a different type of sealer (e.g., water-based), it\'s best to remove it thoroughly using a suitable stripper before applying K-Seal. You can always test a small area first to check compatibility if you\'re unsure.
When applied correctly, K-Seal Block & Paving Sealer creates a satin finish that maintains good slip resistance even when wet. However, over-application or applying in very thick layers can create a surface film that might become slippery in wet conditions. To ensure optimal safety, always apply thin, even coats and avoid pooling or puddling of the sealer. Consider adding an anti-slip additive to the final coat for additional traction for areas with steep slopes or steps.
Maintaining sealed block paving is simple: Regularly sweep or blow away leaves, dirt, and debris Clean spills promptly to prevent staining Periodically wash the surface with a mild detergent solution Apply a maintenance coat every 3-4 years or when water no longer beads on the surface Treat any moss or algae growth with a fungicidal wash as soon as it appears Top up any disturbed jointing sand and seal it to maintain joint integrity Avoid using pressure washers on maximum settings, as this can damage the sealer and joints With proper maintenance, your sealed block paving can maintain its appearance and protection for many years.
K-Seal Block & Paving Sealer enhances the natural colours of your paving with a subtle satin finish. The effect is similar to how paving looks when wet – bringing out the depth of colour without appearing glossy or artificial. The enhancement will be more noticeable on porous materials like standard block paving than on dense materials like granite. For a more dramatic "wet look" finish, multiple coats can be applied, or you might consider our Block Star Colour Changing Sealer, which is specifically designed to maximise colour enhancement.
Used many times for customer's drives and patio's, good product with easy use.

1. Clean. the surface to ensure that the Kingfisher K-Seal Total Paving Sealer keys to the paving, the surface must firstly be cleansed of all moss, mould, lichen, carbon deposits, oil stains and airborne dirt. Thoroughly wash the paving using a pressure washer, ideally with an output pressure of 2500 to 3000 psi and a spray lance equipped with a “turbo-jet” nozzle or specialist rotary attachment designed for cleaning paved surfaces. Alternatively, the surface can be cleaned manually with Kingfisher Max Strength Patio Cleaner and a stiff bristle deck scrubbing brush (see relevant product data sheet). Allow to dry.

2. Repairs. It is often only after cleaning that the full extent of required repairs becomes obvious. Replace cracked or broken flagstones / pavers with new or good condition weathered ones (sometimes a better match!). Block paving with joints 1.5mm to 5mm wide should have the joint sand topped up with either kiln dried sand or Kingfisher Blockfill. Flagstone joints (typically > 8mm) should be re-pointed using Kingfisher Pointing Mortar. Make sure that all excess sand residues are carefully swept up using a soft broom so as to avoid unsightly sand debris being sealed onto the block faces.

3. Biocidal Wash Treatment. After cleaning (once dry) the paving should be thoroughly sprayed to refusal with Kingfisher Bio Wash. This is applied by low pressure sprayer (as for weed killer etc.) to the entire paving surface and is left to dry out (do not rinse). This is an extremely important phase in the process because it will greatly reduce the possibility of moss or lichens re-establishing. The pressure washing process leaves the paving looking clean, but the moss root systems and mould/lichen spores are still present in hundreds of microscopic crevices and especially in the joints. Spraying the paving liberally with Kingfisher Bio Wash ensures that the paving is sanitised and inert, ready for the first coat of Kingfisher K-Seal Total Paving Sealer.

Note: Some paving materials occasionally exhibit corrosive efflorescence (salting) and where this occurs it can cause sealers to de-laminate. If this occurs, contact our technical department for guidance.
Kingfisher K-Seal Total Paving Sealer should be applied neat without dilution by either brush, roller or sprayer.Always apply to a small inconspicuous test area to check you are satisfied with the finish before proceeding to full application.
a. Brush Application: Use only premium grade brushes suitable for use with solvent-based paints. Budget rangebrushes will shed their bristles spoiling the finish. Work in broad even strokes working first in one direction, then the other, ensuring that no ponding occurs.
b. Roller Application: Use a standard (disposable) medium knap roller fixed to a sturdy decorator’s pole and roll the product on in broad sweeps ensuring even coverage without ponding.
c. Spray Application: It is possible to apply the product using either a manual low pressure solvent resistant sprayer Kingfisher Solvent Resistant Sprayer or a professional airless high pressure sprayer (e.g.Graco 4900 / 5900 series). The main advantage of this method of application is that it eliminates the possibility of any sand being picked up from the joints by a sticky roller or brush. Standard garden/ DIY sprayers(including fence sprayers) are NOT suitable as they do not have solvent resistant seals.Apply two coats for best results allowing 3 to 4 hours between coats.
Kingfisher Solvent Resistant Sprayer
Note: Kingfisher K-Seal Total Paving Sealer MUST NOT be applied to wet or damp surfaces, if rain is imminent, inhigh humidity or if ambient temperatures are below +5°C over the following 24 hr period. As with all solvent acrylic sealers, be sure to schedule the works allowing sufficient time for initial cure to take place before the evening dew point to avoid airborne moisture contamination.
Brushes can be cleaned in Kingfisher Solvent No.2 but disposable rollers should be allowed to cure fully beforebeing discarded. Spray equipment must be thoroughly flushed with Kingfisher Solvent No.2 before being stored away. If the sealer should become accidentally moisture contaminated during application or drying, this will result in white staining (oil & resin mixing with water). This can be remediated with Kingfisher Solvent No.2 and you should refer to the relevant Product Data Sheet on our website for detailed instructions.
