Lead which has not benefited from the protection of Patination Oil from new, tends to naturally discolour and to lose its appearance. This is because unprotected lead flashing stains white through a chemical process called “lead carbonation”, which is carbon dioxide in the rainwater attacking the lead. This forms a white lead carbonate that accumulates over time to form a protective “patina”, which effectively halts further decay but unfortunately does not look attractive.
Paint for Lead Flashings
“Kingfisher lead renovation paint” is manufactured from a blend of high bond acrylic polymer and premium pigments which adheres to both lead and carbonated lead to dramatically improve the appearance of carbonated lead flashings. This is especially useful when a roof has been cleaned or re-coated (e.g. with Kolourseal TM) and the renovation highlights the unsightly leadwork. In this scenario “Kingfisher lead renovation paint” enhances the finished restoration with clean, contrasting lead flashings.
Sealing your lead flashings with “Kingfisher lead renovation paint” also stops the lead carbonation from contaminating adjacent building materials. Unchecked lead carbonation will mar natural slate, stone and brickwork permanently. “Kingfisher lead renovation paint” encapsulates the lead carbonation without the need for any abrasive surface preparation.

I bought this for our roofers to renovate lead flashing that had peeling old paint. They found it very easy to apply, not inclined to run, and gave excellent coverage. They applied two coats and the lead now looks like new. They found it to work much better than alternatives they had tried previously. This is an excellent product.

The paint seems as good as promised, but I had to buy 2.5 litres and I have 2 litres left over. It goes a long way!

Quite impressed. I'm a builder and needed it for an old box gutter that was past it best and leaking. I only had a chance to put one coat on due to the less than optimal weather conditions, but it has done the trick. The colour once cured is not too dissimilar to new lead and fairly unobtrusive. I would definitely recommend, even if a little steep on price. Well worth giving it a go.

Our roofer re-coated our tiles with the Kingfisher roof coating in Terracotta colour which looks amazing, but the leadwork which we had never really noticed before, suddenly looked very tatty. He persuaded us to try the lead renovation paint and that made a huge difference, really finished the job but I've delayed this review for a few months because I wasn't 100% convinced that it would last, but I can report it still looks good.
