Surface Preparation & Application

Before You Start

  2. Treat biological growth - use Bio-wash Roof Cleaner - Professional Algae & Moss Removal, lichen, or fungal growth to prevent re-growth
  3. Allow drainage - remove standing water (damp surfaces acceptable)
  4. Check compatibility - test existing coatings for adhesion, avoid fresh bitumen surfaces

Application Method

  • Tools: Brush or roller for systematic application
  • Coverage rates:
    • Temporary repairs: Work into crevices, treat details first
    • Single coat: 1 litre/m² for whole roof coverage
    • Two coat system: 0.5 litre/m² per coat for uniform thickness
  • Reinforcement: Use scrim mesh between coats for cracks or high-movement areas
  • Cure time: Waterproof immediately, walk-on safe after complete cure (up to 72 hours)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply FIBRESEAL in wet weather conditions?

Yes, this is one of FIBRESEAL\'s key advantages. It can be applied successfully to damp surfaces and even underwater in extreme emergencies. Unlike water based products, it won\'t wash off if rain occurs during application or curing, making it perfect for urgent repairs when waiting for dry weather isn\'t an option.

How much product do I need for my roof area?

Coverage depends on your application method: Single thick coat: 1 litre covers 1-2m² (recommended for whole roof coating) Two thin coats: 1 litre covers 1m² total (0.5m² per coat for optimal uniformity) Emergency repairs: Higher coverage as you\'re targeting specific problem areas Measure your roof area and consider ordering 10-15% extra for overlaps and future touch-ups.

Is this suitable for DIY application or do I need a professional?

FIBRESEAL is designed for both professional contractors and competent DIY users. Application is straightforward, using either a brush or roller, and the thixotropic formulation ensures it won\'t drip or run. However, for large commercial roofs, complex details, or if you\'re uncomfortable working at height, we recommend professional installation. The key is proper surface preparation, which determines long-term performance.

FIBRESEAL adheres to most common roofing materials including felt, asbestos, slate, metal sheeting, concrete, and lead. Special considerations:

Metal roofs: Require Kingfisher K-X11 primer system for optimal adhesion Fibreglass/GRP: Works well on pitched roof sheets, but flat GRP with hard resin topcoats may need surface preparation Not suitable for: Fresh bitumen or tar-based surfaces When in doubt, test a small inconspicuous area first or contact our technical team.

How long will the repair last and when can I walk on it?

Immediate waterproofing: FIBRESEAL is waterproof as soon as applied Initial cure: 24 hours at 20°C (longer in cold weather) Full cure: Up to 72 hours, depending on temperature Walk-on safe: Only after full cure is achieved Lifespan: 5- 10+ years with proper application and surface preparation. The acrylic polymers are UV-resistant and won\'t become brittle with age, ensuring long-term flexibility and performance.

Finally!

I used Fibreseal, in black, on the concrete roof of a bomb shelter from WW2 that over the years, regardless of various 'miracle' solutions, has leaked like a sieve. It has been over 12 months since I sealed the roof and there has been no water ingress at all. It was not too easy to apply due to the thickness of the product but once in place it has finally solved the massive leak problem. I recommend Fibreseal unreservedly.

can be applied in cold weather

Having used various Kingfisher products (masonry paint, asbestos sealer) with good results over 9 years for a shed near the sea at Dungeness - thought I should say something about the Fibreseal roof repair. I bought a tin in 2015 just in case. Fast forward 7 years to December 2022 - got a leak in my felt flat roof. It's 5 degrees c outside, wind chill is 1 degree. A bit damp too but things will get worse. I ask myself - will this stuff work? It's been on my shelf for 7 years. Label says - can be applied at 5 degrees c. Got on the roof, stirred it, painted it into cracks in the seams. Went on very smoothly. Come the rain - that problem is now fixed. I've just ordered more tins and the scrim tape just in case for next year when I might do the whole roof. I have confidence in these products based on what I've seen so far.

Best by far

Tried for many years to seal my leaking concrete garage roof with various bitumen based products. Always short lived and never 100% effective. Then discovered Kingfisher Fibreseal. Absolutely brilliant. Took time to apply properly but the results are amazing and been nearly a year now without a leak. Just about to apply a second coat just to be certain over the winter. Have applied to my son's roof with same excellent results. Fully recommended.
